Villa Hygiea

ARCHITECTURE

2 joung architects, both ETH Zurich graduates, were responsible for planning the RENOVATIONS. Their main aim was to preserve the villa’s historic exterior where possible: the facade, windows, old wooden shutters, stonework using TECHELSBERG MARBLE (which is no longer quarried) and the 19th CENTURY STAIRCASE in the tower. Inside, they chose modern, clean lines for the new elements. To achieve a maximum level of comfort, the old roof had to be removed. Although the architects initially designed a modern structure for the top floor, a traditional gable roof was more in keeping with the original design. Incorporating the latest standards, it creates a spacious INTERIOR while making the most of the wonderful views: a fascinating 180° VISTA of the LAKE, Pörtschach’s WEST BAY, the KARAWANKEN RANGE and JULIAN ALPS. A model of the young architects’ visionary design is on display in the entrance area.

BUILDING

Our objective was to achieve maximum COMFORT and SAVINGS for the tenants as well as to PRESERVE THE HISTORIC FABRIC of the building and use eco-friendly resources. The architects decided on low-temperature underfloor heating throughout the villa, repairing the historic casement windows on the outside and fitting MODERN TRIPLE GLAZING on the inside to complement the interior design. A HEAT PUMP supplies power from a depth of 110 m for heating and hot water. There are not therefore any carbon emissions and electricity is only required for operating the low-noise pump.

We wish to thank all the local tradesmen who helped with the renovations, first and foremost the renowned Villach-based contractor JOSEF WILLROIDER GmbH that carried out the building, carpentry and joinery work. Another company we are indebted to for the excellent service is W&W Baumanagement GmbH under Gert Wulz who was responsible for project management and coordinating the work.
